'Formidable' campaigner to be remembered at London exhibition -  Mark of a Great Campaigner display to remember Sheila McKechnie

Where:
Resource for London, 356 Holloway Road, N7 6PA London
When: 2nd to 30th May, 2015

An exhibition remembering one of the country's most effective political campaigners is to open in north London in May.

She was a director of the charity Shelter and played a pivotal role in the founding of a charity for young people called the Foyer Federation.

The Falkirk-born activist's campaigning life is to be remembered at a temporary exhibition from 2nd May, hosted by the Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK); a charity that stands up for campaigner rights and provides training courses for the change makers of tomorrow.
Sheila's work on food issues led directly to the setting up of the Food Standards Agency in 2000 and the work on display will highlight how she made a positive and lasting difference to the lives of millions of people by fighting for social justice.

'Expensive, ineffective and unjust': What next for immigration detention after the parliamentary inquiry?

When:  26 May 2015 - 18:30 - 20:30

Where:  Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, 65 Fleet Street, London EC4Y 1HS

Human Rights Lawyers Association (HRLA) and Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID) invite you to 'Expensive, ineffective and unjust' - What next for immigration detention after the parliamentary inquiry?

The UK is the only member of the EU not to have a time limit on detention, and detains more individuals and for longer than any other EU state. But detention without limit does nothing to make enforcement more effective, has a devastating impact on mental and physical health, and leads to the abuse of human rights.

In February 2015, the cross-party parliamentary inquiry into the use of immigration detention made wide-ranging recommendations for change to the use of detention, and has called for a radical shift in Home Office practice. This event will examine the inquiry recommendations on the use of detention, including safeguards against arbitrary and unlawful detention, the need for a time limit on detention, judicial oversight of the use of detention, and access to good quality legal advice for immigration detainees.

Speakers include Paul Blomfield MP, Vice-Chair of the Parliamentary Inquiry into the use of immigration detention in the UK, Bail for Immigration Detainees, and Medical Justice.

Entry is free but seats are limited so please RSVP to administrator@hrla.org.uk

Where:  Amnesty Human Rights Centre, 17-25 New Inn Yard, EC2A 3EA London

The DVA invites you to its 4th Annual Conference, 'The Future of Diaspora Volunteering in Development'.  This one-day conference will bring together diaspora-led groups, decision makers and volunteer-involving organisations to discuss how we can create opportunities for diaspora volunteering from the current economic, social and political climate in the UK and internationally.

The conference will raise awareness among diaspora, donors, and other development practitioners of the role in development, impact and potential of diaspora volunteering.  It will showcase good practice and lessons learnt and will inspire delegates to engage diaspora volunteers in their programmes.

  • How can diaspora volunteering and skills transfer contribute to the Post MDGs/2015 framework?
  • Who benefits from volunteering - the volunteer, host country or country of heritage?
  • Channels for diaspora voices
  • Diversifying funding for volunteering programmes
  • Diaspora youth volunteering – how can we engage the young generation?
  • Influencing and engaging decision makers on the impact of and support for diaspora volunteering programmes - a practical workshop to develop a concrete action plan to pool our collective contacts and resources to secure support for diaspora volunteering programmes
  • Launch of the new DVA website including a revamped and interactive members' area

The DVA will also hold its Annual General Meeting for members during the conference.

If you are interested in hiring a stand at this event to promote your organisation or services to the diaspora delegates, please contact the organiser for more information.

New funding to support work progression of low-paid workers - the closing date for applications is 1 June 2015 (12 noon)

The problem of low pay in London is growing, and is a major contributor to poverty in the capital. Currently nearly a quarter of London workers earn less than the living wage, and the majority of Londoners in poverty live in households where someone is working.
However despite all of this, there has been little focus to date on programmes to help people to escape low pay.
Step Up is a special initiative of Trust for London and Walcot Foundation which will pilot initiatives that support people to progress to better paid, more secure employment and develop their careers.
Applications are now open, and the closing date for applications is 1 June 2015 (12 noon).

For more info and to apply, visit the Step Up page on Trust for London website.

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK Comments: Mr John Major  is right about migrants in the UK and worldwide. Most of  migrants  leave their countries as asylum seekers fleeing persecution, lack of freedom and human rights abuses. Other leave their countries just to look for new opportunities. Arriving in the new countries such as UK , they work hard to survive. In most cases they have left their families and relatives. They have to share their earnings with the people their left behind and to support the education of their relatives.  They live in disadvantageous situations because they  are not  in the same situation like the British people who  have families that  help them to set up a business for example, pay their education, help them to raise funding or to get a bank loan, to inherit houses and other assets. They face institutional discrimination because most of the...
