Knowledge Empowers You -Youth Project

The KEY has been specially created as a tool for young people. The name of the project - KEY stands for Knowledge Empowers You and this is exactly the aim of it – to empower and to give options in world full of challenges for young people. It has initially been designed to improve the prospects of socially and financially excluded young people (aged 14-18) with refugee, asylum seeker and migrant background. But soon after its launch the scope of the project increased to include prevention, raising awareness and engaging the young minds in diverse and creative activities, giving them chance to take active part in all aspects of the project and be leaders themselves.
Rather than correcting what is "wrong" with youths' behaviour, KEY takes the opposite approach and focuses on what is good and positive trying to emphasise on it, to inspire the young people, using their own talents.
The core of the project is psychological wellbeing workshops focusing on wide variety of topics along with facilitated art, music, sport and career and education advice sessions. The project provides a balanced programme of activities that develops the whole person-mind, body and soul – in an environment of social interaction and team working.
The Evelyn Oldfield Unit runs this project with shared values of collaboration and participation at the core and thus we are looking for steering group members, collaborators, advice, and new connections, including reaching out to small community groups working with young people. KEY has been funded by BBC Children in Need and will look into expanding.
Activities:

  • Psychological wellbeing workshops focused on wide variety of topics – including restoring emotional resilience, managing stress and anger, dealing with conflicts, anxiety, sadness, persistent thoughts, healthy eating, and exploring sleep patterns and dreams.
  • Sports activities – including football, pilates, zumba, caipoera, yoga and parkour -aiming to promote social cohesion and tolerance, sense of belonging and ownership.
  • Music classes – capturing the imagination of young people through music activities using their creative and physical energy, allowing them to discover their positive self -identity, interests, and strengths, foster their resilience and self-worth and enable them to achieve positive recognition from their peers.
  • Art activities- developing of skills and learning opportunities through creative art.
  • Education and career advice -school re-enrolment assistance, individual academic planning, study habits clinics, assistance identifying financial aid and scholarship opportunities, completing college applications, CV clinic, training in writing a winning Cover Letter, assessing career options, preparing for Job interviews.
  • Social event-the KEY will seek to inspire and motivate our project participants and empower them to voice their opinions and be part of the decisions that affect them.

We are passionate to help develop the potential of young people by unleashing their strengths, creativity and confidence and we aim to make a difference to their life.
As part of this work we are able to offer free youth activities and workshops to organisations and community groups working with young people (aged 14-18) with refugee, asylum seeker and migrant background, and as the project has been recently launched we are keen to widen the group of organisations benefiting from this.
If your organisation is interested in liaising with the EOU's project or would like to learn more about the activities please contact Mariya at mariya@evelynoldfield.co.uk or on: 0207 697 4103.

OSIC Training Programme

Our Director, Mulat Haregot, attended the training provided by Trust for London for refugee and migrant community organisations. This is a message from him:
"Trust for London, many thanks for giving us the opportunity to attend the four days OSIC Level 1 course training programme.
I found the training refreshing and equipped with the current immigration rules and regulations.
The training was also a very good opportunity to meet with representatives of the BAMER groups and share experience and future training opportunities to build their capacities."

Free training around volunteering for small to medium BAME organisations

Volunteers are all about giving; their time, their skills, their effort. Volunteers can make an enormous impact by helping to expand the capacity on their host organisation:

  • By helping deliver important services
  • By bringing skills to the organisation that it doesn't already have
  • By enabling the organisation to explore new ideas it wouldn't have the time to do otherwise
  • By giving dedicated attention to specific areas of work

But it shouldn't be a one-way street; organisations shouldn't just see volunteers as "free help" and should see themselves as "involving"  the volunteer rather than "using" them.
They should be clear about the value that the volunteer brings to the organisation and about how the organisation can give back to the volunteer. To do this they need to have a clear understanding of how their organisation recruits, retains and manages volunteers by:

  • Strategically taking on volunteers rather than using them ad hoc
  • Having policies that support both the volunteer and the organisation
  • Having a clear definition of the role you want to fill and the qualities that the volunteer would need to bring to it
  • By providing the right support and management of the volunteer when they have joined the organisation.

To enable small to medium (up to 25 paid staff) BAME organisations to do all this BTEG – with the support of the City Bridge Trust – has a series of four free courses that cover all aspects of getting the most from your volunteers.

The courses are:
Creating a volunteer programme                           18 Sept 2015  Full day
Using volunteers – policy and practice                   16 Oct Half-day am
Getting the right volunteer                                       16 Oct Half-day pm
Support and supervision of volunteers                    28 Oct Full day

Bridging the gap in funding in the BAME voluntary and community sector

Voice4Change is happy to announce the release of a new report: Bridging the gap in funding in the BAME voluntary and community sector. Commissioned by the Baring Foundation, and based on feedback from representatives of almost 100 BME charities from across England, the report looks into the challenges which BAME organisations have faced securing funding, and gives recommended solutions. Most charities are having their funding cut at the moment, but BAME organisations are being hit harder than "mainstream" charities. This is at a time where need for these charities is greater than ever.

The overriding feedback from Voice4Change members is that they want to work on the same page as funders, to communicate openly with them, and to have funds better directed to meet their needs. Recommendations from the report include foundations and trusts re-organising their funds to create BAME specific funding pots, and the creation of an umbrella organisation which facilitates dialogue between funders and charitable organisations. These and other suggestions, are outlined in the report below.

Here is the report in full

Funding & Grants

Cabinet Office/BLF Local Sustainability Fund - Do this from now till August 31st.

The Big Lottery Fund wants to help Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise organisations which are delivering important services, but currently facing challenges, to plan for the future.

Delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of the Office for Civil Society, the Local Sustainability Fund aims to help these organisations become stronger, more sustainable, and more resilient, to ensure they prosper and continue to support beneficiaries in future years.

There are two aspects to the programme:

  • VCSE Diagnostic Tool
  • The Local Sustainability Fund

VCSE Diagnostic Tool
All organisations will use the online  diagnostic tool to gauge their strengths – but also identify what where you need to focus on changing how you work. Involve a 'critical friend' in this process – should take about an hour.
The Local Sustainability Fund
From the completed diagnostic assessments, BLF will invite a number of VCSE organisations to apply for the fund. You then have 8 weeks to apply. Costs can include an individual or organisation that can help you make the changes. Projects should start in January.

They will fund about 260 projects of around £70k.

Note: you will need to complete an on-line eligibility checker.
This appears to rule out unregistered, unincorporated charities and all those with an  income of less than £100k or greater than £1.5 million. The fund is for those VCS organisations delivering frontline services.

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK Comments: Mr John Major  is right about migrants in the UK and worldwide. Most of  migrants  leave their countries as asylum seekers fleeing persecution, lack of freedom and human rights abuses. Other leave their countries just to look for new opportunities. Arriving in the new countries such as UK , they work hard to survive. In most cases they have left their families and relatives. They have to share their earnings with the people their left behind and to support the education of their relatives.  They live in disadvantageous situations because they  are not  in the same situation like the British people who  have families that  help them to set up a business for example, pay their education, help them to raise funding or to get a bank loan, to inherit houses and other assets. They face institutional discrimination because most of the...
