The key discussant will be Professor Sharon Hutchinson, whose seminal anthropological study Nuer Dilemmas famously revisited the work of E. E. Evans-Pritchard on the Nuer of South Sudan. We particularly invite papers which speak to the interplay of anthropology and history. There will be a special launch of an African Documentary Film Screening Project run by Keith Shiri. This year it will focus on the role of documentary films in African independence. We invite applications from outstanding historians with specialist expertise in any region, but with wide knowledge of African history from c. 1500. The post is tenable from 1 October 2016 to 31 December 2017. The appointee must hold a PhD or equivalent, and will be an outstanding researcher in their field. The successful applicant will be required to contribute to undergraduate teaching for the Historical Tripos, in particular, lecturing in Part I Paper 21 (Empires and World History from the Fifteenth Century to the First World War) and Part I Paper 23 (World History since 1914) and especially in Part II Paper 29 (African History since 1800). The postholder may also contribute to a Part I Themes and Sources paper and will supervise undergraduate dissertations. At graduate level, the postholder will contribute to teaching for the MPhil in African Studies at the Centre of African Studies and for the MPhil in World History in the Faculty of History, as well as supervising dissertations for these courses. The incumbent will be required to participating in examining at both undergraduate and MPhil levels and will be expected to offer College supervisions in Part I Papers 21 and 23 and especially in Part II Paper 29.
