Exhibition - Adopting Britain: 70 Years of Migration

When: 17 Apr 2015 (All day)

Where: Southbank Centre

Presented by the Southbank Centre in partnership with Counterpoints Arts and running until 6 September 2015

Adopting Britain: 70 Years of Migration is part of the Southbank Centre's Changing Britain Festival. Inspired by Tales of a New Jerusalem, a series of books by historian David Kynaston, this festival looks at British society, culture and politics of the past 70 years.

This exhibition explores the stories of many different communities that have made Britain their home, from those who chose to come here for work or for love, to those who have sought asylum, fleeing persecution or war in their own countries. Adopting Britain celebrates the keepsakes, traditions and languages communities bring with them from their mother countries, as well as the ways in which individuals and families adapt to their new home. Throughout the exhibition can be found photographs from the Migration Museum Project's 100 Images of Migration.

Looking at the ways in which migration is reported in the media, and the fact that people arriving in the UK have not always received a warm welcome, the exhibition also celebrates those acts of kindness and humanity as the British people, as diverse as they have ever been, reach out to new communities, offering friendship and hope.

Play: 'Love Letters to the Home Office'

When:
30 Apr 2015 (All day) - 1 May 2015 (All day)
Where: Battersea Arts Centre, Lavender Hill Battersea London SW11 5TN

Love Letters to the Home Office brings to life the true stories of people separated today by the UK's 2012 Family Immigration Rules. The Rules means that our human rights - specifically, our rights to live in the UK and with our family - are dependent on how much we earn. For the last year North Star have been collecting personal stories of love, joy and pain; of extraordinary moments in extraordinary relationships that cross borders, oceans and seas.

Katharine Rose Williams Radojičić is a theatremaker who herself worked for 2 years to bring her husband to the UK.  A team of contributing performers, poets, musicians and collaborators combine these true stories with new work in an exploration of the real impact of the UK's immigration policies and media-fuelled public opinion.

Part of Battersea Art Centre's  Taking A Stand Season

Virgin Money announces new charitable foundation and welcomes £4 million government donation

Virgin Money has announced the launch of the Virgin Money Foundation – a new charitable foundation that will invest in projects designed to benefit the communities in which Virgin Money works.

The announcement coincided with a visit by The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne to Virgin Money's store in Stockton-on-Tees, where he announced £4 million of Government funding for the Virgin Money Foundation to support charitable projects in the North-East of England. This funding complements the £1 million that Virgin Money announced in September 2014 that it would invest in North-East community projects.

All money donated will be invested into community projects and Virgin Money will cover the operating costs of the new Virgin Money Foundation, which will be independent from the bank, with its own Chair and Board of Trustees. It is expected that the Virgin Money Foundation will become fully operational during the first half of 2015.

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK Comments: Mr John Major  is right about migrants in the UK and worldwide. Most of  migrants  leave their countries as asylum seekers fleeing persecution, lack of freedom and human rights abuses. Other leave their countries just to look for new opportunities. Arriving in the new countries such as UK , they work hard to survive. In most cases they have left their families and relatives. They have to share their earnings with the people their left behind and to support the education of their relatives.  They live in disadvantageous situations because they  are not  in the same situation like the British people who  have families that  help them to set up a business for example, pay their education, help them to raise funding or to get a bank loan, to inherit houses and other assets.
