Free Health and Safety for Marginalized Communities course

When: Wednesday, July 15 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Where: Voluntary Action Camden, 293-299 Kentish Town Road, London, NW5 2TJ

The course will give you Health & Safety essentials.

Who is this course for? It is targeted in particular at migrant workers, unpaid carers, cleaners and people working in the hospitality industry. Some of the most marginalised people - probably working long hours, in dangerous conditions and on low pay.
Too many people are working in dangerous and unhealthy conditions - and often working long hours for low pay. Job insecurity pushes people to keep their heads down and just get on with the job, even if it's risking their health. Lots of people may not have the help and support of a trade union. If this sounds like you, then make that change. Attend the VAC/London Hazards Centre training and have some fun learning about your rights and how to enforce them.

What does this course cover?

  • Do you want to know your rights when it comes to health & safety?
  • Do you know who is responsible for enforcing health & safety?

What you will get from the Training

  • Main Health & safety legislation - you will be able to identify the main H&S laws
  • Who is responsible for Health and safety - you will have knowledge of employer and employee responsibilities
  • Enforcing health & safety - you will be able to identify the principle organisations that enforce H&S
  • Basic risk assessment - you will be able to recognise risks - learners will be able to carry out a risk assessment
  • Sources of advice, information & support.

Cost: Free. This course is run in collaboration with London Hazards Centre.

Book your place through eventbrite. For queries about the course contact refer to Paul at London Hazards Centre mail@lhc.org.uk

Study & Research

Call for participation in a Civic Engagement Project at the Refugee Archives at UEL

Project Title: Democratic Access or Privileged Exclusion: Civic Engagement through the Preservation and Access to Refugee Archives

The project will act as a pilot study to investigate the practicality of the concept of a Refugee Living Archive and Oral History Project along similar lines to the Vietnamese Oral History Project based at the University of California, Irvine (http://sites.uci.edu/vaohp/), which assembles, preserves, digitizes and disseminates the life stories of Vietnamese Americans in Southern California. We will preserve and disseminate the lived narratives of London's refugee community. It will also consider the potential demand for a community focusing oral history centre at UEL.

We invite our local refugee community to participate in the research by sharing your story with us. We are interested in hearing about your lived experience in Britain as this would help us to develop an oral history and living refugee archives which can be accessible to other communities and students across UK and elsewhere.

For more information, please contact Rumana Hashem, PhD Post-doctoral Researcher, at r.hashem@uel.ac.uk  or on 0208 223 7676.

The Survey

Funding & Grants

Cabinet Office/BLF Local Sustainability Fund - Do this from now till August 31st.

The Big Lottery Fund wants to help Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise organisations which are delivering important services, but currently facing challenges, to plan for the future.

Delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of the Office for Civil Society, the Local Sustainability Fund aims to help these organisations become stronger, more sustainable, and more resilient, to ensure they prosper and continue to support beneficiaries in future years.

There are two aspects to the programme:

  • VCSE Diagnostic Tool
  • The Local Sustainability Fund

VCSE Diagnostic Tool
All organisations will use the online  diagnostic tool to gauge their strengths – but also identify what where you need to focus on changing how you work. Involve a 'critical friend' in this process – should take about an hour.
The Local Sustainability Fund
From the completed diagnostic assessments, BLF will invite a number of VCSE organisations to apply for the fund. You then have 8 weeks to apply. Costs can include an individual or organisation that can help you make the changes. Projects should start in January.

They will fund about 260 projects of around £70k.

Note: you will need to complete an on-line eligibility checker.
This appears to rule out unregistered, unincorporated charities and all those with an  income of less than £100k or greater than £1.5 million. The fund is for those VCS organisations delivering frontline services.

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK Comments: Mr John Major  is right about migrants in the UK and worldwide. Most of  migrants  leave their countries as asylum seekers fleeing persecution, lack of freedom and human rights abuses. Other leave their countries just to look for new opportunities. Arriving in the new countries such as UK , they work hard to survive. In most cases they have left their families and relatives. They have to share their earnings with the people their left behind and to support the education of their relatives.  They live in disadvantageous situations because they  are not  in the same situation like the British people who  have families that  help them to set up a business for example, pay their education, help them to raise funding or to get a bank loan, to inherit houses and other assets. They face institutional discrimination because most of the...
