Europe could take MORE migrants from Syria, says UN refugee agency head

EUROPE could take more refugees from Syria, the head of the United Nations (UN) refugee agency has said as the European Union (EU) continues to buckle under the strain of its migrant crisis.

Filippo Grandi said the EU would be able to take more genuine refugees fleeing the war-torn country if they worked better together.

The Italian diplomat's comments came after several European leaders warned that Europe was on the brink of collapse because of the ongoing migrant crisis.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Europe was in "very grave danger" as he urged EU leaders to send a message that the continent "will not welcome all the refugees".

UN Seeks Over $500 Million to Help Nigerian, CAR Refugees

GENEVA—

The United Nations refugee agency and its partners are appealing for more than half a billion dollars to provide life-saving aid to hundreds of thousands of people fleeing conflicts in Nigeria and the Central African Republic. The funding would also assist the communities hosting the refugees.

While all eyes are trained on Syria's refugee crisis, the world has seemingly forgotten the conflicts playing out in Nigeria and Central African Republic — two of Africa's biggest humanitarian crises.

The United Nations reports nearly a quarter-million Nigerians have fled to neighboring countries to escape the brutal and murderous attacks of Boko Haram militants. And, it says ongoing instability and violence in the CAR has forced almost a half-million people to flee across borders.

The new U.N. appeal aims to help these refugees as well as the communities sheltering them in Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo and Republic of Congo.

Full Extent of Germany Migrant Sex Attacks Revealed – Incidents in 75 Per Cent Of The Country

Cologne-style sex attacks by migrant gangs occurred in 12 of Germany's 16 states, or 75 per cent, on New Year's Eve, as revealed by German police. Although localised reports of attacks emerged almost immediately via social media, the full scale of the phenomenon is only now becoming clear – and it's having a devastating effect on German society.

Some 1,049 men and women were victimised in Cologne on New Year's Eve, subject to a litany of crimes ranging from pickpocketing to gang rape at the hands of migrants and asylum seekers.

It was by far the most widespread example of migrant crime on New Years Eve, but a report by the German Judicial Police (BKA), obtained by news daily Sueddeutsche Zeitungand the NDR and WDR television stations, reveals that it was far from unique, the Localhas reported.

A state by state breakdown shows that almost all of Germany was affected by the crime spree. North Rhine-Westphalia, where Cologne is located, suffered the heaviest bout of migrant crime, registering some 1000 individual complaints.

Is immigration causing the UK housing crisis?

Migrants aren't jumping queues for social housing, and in some places immigration actually lowers housing demand

In a speech in December 2012, Theresa May claimed that more than a third of all new housing demand in Britain was caused by immigration. "And there is evidence that without the demand caused by mass immigration, house prices could be 10% lower over a 20-year period," she said. The statement mirrors a common trope in any debate on the housing crisis: the idea that it is caused by mass migration, and that without migration, Britain would have no need for more housing.

The London School of Economics report that May cited as the source for her claim also says: "In the early years even better off migrants tend to form fewer households as compared to the indigenous population; to live disproportionately in private renting; and to live at higher densities. However, the longer they stay, the more their housing consumption resembles that of similar indigenous households."

This, in part, debunks the idea that immigration is the biggest strain on housing – new arrivals tend to live in denser households and take up less space.

Leaving the EU will not stop immigration to the UK, says leader of campaign to stay in the EU Stuart Rose

Leaving the European Union will not stop immigration to the UK, the leader of the campaign to keep Britain in the bloc has said.

Stuart Rose, the chair of Britain Stronger in Europe, said that immigration was not simply a product of being in the EU and that it would continue even if Britain votes to leave.

The UK is set to have a referendum on membership of the EU by the end of 2017, and immigration policy is set to be one of the main points debated.

Head of campaign to keep Britain in EU forgets name of his own organisation

Lord Rose, the former head of Marks & Spencer who is leading the Britain Stronger In Europe, is facing embarrassment after repeatedly getting the name his own organisation wrong

The head of the campaign to keep Britain in the European Union has failed four times to correctly name the organisation which he leads.

Lord Rose repeatedly failed to correctly say he was leading the Britain Stronger In Europe campaign, eventually settling on the "Better Stay in Britain Campaign".

The former Marks & Spencer boss first said he was chairman of online grocer Ocado before realising he was being grilled about the EU campaign rather than his business experience.

Asked to identify himself at the start of a Sky News interview, he said: "Stuart Rose and I'm the chairman of Ocado, I'm chairman of - sorry - of Stay in Britain, Better in Britain campaign."

Realising his mistake and laughing, he said: "Right, start again."

Netherlands claimed more than £500,000 from refugees in four years

Working refugees have to hand over 75% of income to cover costs of living, and declare savings and valuables that may be liable for deductions

Refugees in the Netherlands have paid more than €700,000 (£530,000) over the past four years towards the cost of living in centres for asylum seekers, figures show.

Plans in Denmark, Switzerland and Germany to seize cash and valuables from refugees to help pay for their accommodation have caused controversy recently.

Under a regulation that has been in place since 2008, working refugees in the Netherlands have to hand over 75% of their income to cover the cost of food and living expenses.

Asylum seekers are also required to declare any savings or valuables they bring into the country to the COA, the organisation that runs Dutch refugee centres.

Deductions can be made if the holdings amount to more than €5,895 for an individual or €11,790 for a family. Personal possessions are included, though exceptions are made for items such as computers, mobile phones and wedding rings.

Some Migrants in Germany Want to Go Home

Disenchanted with job prospects and unsettled by cultural differences, a number embark on return journeys

BERLIN—In October, Amer sold all his belongings in Syria and took his family to a safer life in Germany. Four months later, he wants to return to a country still at war.

Once in Germany, Amer discovered an unexpected reality: Instead of the small house he was hoping for and money to help him open a business, he was given a bare room in an old administrative building turned into an emergency shelter. Now he is packing his bags again.

"I came to Germany because everyone was saying it was heaven. Now I regret that decision," said the 30-year-old from Damascus.

Last year, 1.1 million migrants—mainly Arabs, Afghans and Africans—came to Germany to escape war and hardship, many of them risking their lives to make the dangerous journey. Authorities have scrambled to accommodate the influx and Chancellor Angela Merkel is facing growing public discontent, especially after the alleged role of foreign-born men in the mass assaults in Cologne on New Year's Eve.

European Youth Turn Against Immigration

BUDAPEST—

Opinions of young Europeans appear to be hardening toward immigration.  Ask them about their lives and talk quickly turns to the challenge of finding jobs and the threat of Europe being overrun by migrants.

In Hungary, Kitti, a 28-year-old sports teacher and mother of an eight-year-old girl, says, "I went to the main railway station in the summer to help migrants."  But since then her heart has hardened.

"I think we need to stop them coming, they think differently from us, especially when it comes to women."

She cites the notorious drunken gang assaults on women in Germany's Cologne and Hamburg during the New Year festivities.  She describes herself as a progressive in politics, but backs Hungary's controversial prime minister, Viktor Orbán, in his demand that Europe staunch the flow of refugees and migrants.

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK Comments: Mr John Major  is right about migrants in the UK and worldwide. Most of  migrants  leave their countries as asylum seekers fleeing persecution, lack of freedom and human rights abuses. Other leave their countries just to look for new opportunities. Arriving in the new countries such as UK , they work hard to survive. In most cases they have left their families and relatives. They have to share their earnings with the people their left behind and to support the education of their relatives.  They live in disadvantageous situations because they  are not  in the same situation like the British people who  have families that  help them to set up a business for example, pay their education, help them to raise funding or to get a bank loan, to inherit houses and other assets. They face institutional discrimination because most of the...
