'Heaven & Earth' is documentary film that tells the story of an ancient civilization,

An Uli Woman Painter's Tale in the Igbo Heritage Crisis: The Life and Work of Eziafo Okaro
22 June, 5:15 pm - 7:00 pm | SOAS, Russell Square Building |
Room 4429

The story of uli reflects the unsung contribution of women to social development in Igbo land and how this unique contribution has been devalued in the highly male-privileging art field of today.  Ikwuemesi's work focuses on the work of one uli woman painter, Eziafo Okaro, and highlights the trans-epochal qualities of her vision. The story of Eziafo Okaro provides a basis for discussing the need to preserve the self while appropriating the other and how the work of Igbo uli women classicists helped to reinforce and preserve Igbo identity.

Elections in central and southern Africa, dynamics of exclusion and participation

26 June 2015 | Brunei Gallery, Room B102 | 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

SOAS Centre of African Studies, in conjunction with the British Academy.

This one day conference will examine elections in central and southern Africa. Elections in the region are marked by powerful and even paradoxical dynamics of participation and exclusion. Ostensible rituals of mass participation and of legitimation by civil power, electoral successes in the countries of the region have generally made recourse to forms of exclusionary violence during the campaign. And while representative democracies often use mass participation in electoral rituals to legitimate the subsequent exclusion of the demos from the political process, in central and southern Africa this is brought out in an especially acute fashion. For example, many of those who play an active role in electoral campaigns – most especially young men and women from the lowest socio-economic groups – are invariably those who are most excluded by governments brought to power by such campaigns. Looking at papers of a generally ethnographic nature the conference will seek look at elections as part of a complex, oft misunderstood political phenomena in their own right rather than as staging posts en route to a normative conception of democracy.

Convened by Dr Joe Trapido, Anthropology & Sociology Department, SOAS.

Poll delay in Somaliland: Crisis or Process?
A panel discussion presented by Somaliland Focus & the Horn of Africa Seminar
15 June 5:00 pm | African Studies Centre | Oxford University

Presidential and parliamentary elections in Somaliland, scheduled to take place on the 26th June 2015, have been postponed for at least 17 months following delays in voter registration processes. As occurred in the previous election, the President's term has been extended amid criticism from opposition parties and the international community. Scheduled to coincide with the planned elections, this panel will question the extent to which these election delays mark a political crisis in Somaliland, or rather are constitutive of developing processes of democratisation in the country. Panelists will address the practical, political and economic causes and consequences of the delay, and reflect on its impact on Somaliland nation-state building, and political stability across the wider region.

London School of Economics

Urban Memoryscapes Workshop Series
Tuesday 16 June 2015, 10.00-15.00
Venue: Room 9.04, Research Centre Meeting Suite, 9th Floor of Tower 2, St Clements Inn, London, WC2A 2AZ

This workshop will focus on the presence and absence of the past in urban landscapes, and the ways in which these pasts are made visible in the present. Cities are simultaneously spaces of continual flux and re-writing, and spaces laden with memory and its traces. Processes of displacement and the erasure of memory play out in multiple ways: via forced removal, traumatic displacement, natural disasters, as well as bureaucratic processes of planning, eviction, demolition and re-making. How and to what purpose might traces of these pasts be made visible in the contemporary landscape, and how do people claim memory and ownership over remembered landscapes and places? How can we understand the tensions between the future-orientated city as a space of change and growth, and the city as a space characterised by subsumed and sedimented layers of memory?

Scolma Seminar
The Cultural Politics of Dirt in Africa
10 June 2015 | 11:00 AM | See Tee Lee Room | Senate House Library
Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HU, United Kingdom

A seminar by Professor Stephanie Newell, University of Sussex
The project offered an ambitious qualitative, comparative and historical study that asked about the implications of locally situated understandings of dirt in diverse African contexts for current debates about urbanisation, the environment, sexuality and ethnicity. In examining the concept of dirt from the period of the consolidation of colonialism in the 1880s through to the present in two African cities, the project situated contemporary popular media in relation to Africa's long history of intercultural encounters and, in so-doing, aimed to historically contextualise wider policy issues relating to public health, urbanisation and anti-racism in developing countries.

If you would like to attend this seminar, please email Dr Daniel Gilfoyle daniel.gilfoyle@nationalarchives.gsi.gov.uk

The Future of African Christianity and its Relevance to the West by Lamin Sanneh

One of the most remarkable stories of the 20th century is the growth of African Christianity. It is now one of the major forces shaping the face of world religion, not just in Africa itself, but in Europe, with many of the largest churches in London, for example, being African in origin. In this lecture, Lamin Sanneh, one of the world's foremost experts on African Christianity will reflect on the significance and likely future impact of African Christianity on the West.

New Exhibition Installation: Europe Supported by Africa & the America
by Sokari Douglas Camp CBE

Europe Supported by Africa and America is new work created especially for Art15 inspired by the work of William Blake. It's composition with three female figures touching hands and supporting each other bore significance for Sokari. The central figure holds a long wreath which encourages the viewer to move around the drawing, noticing how the figures touch. The work also poses the question 'Is Europe still at the centre of world politics?' Sokari interprets this by representing three figures dressed in contemporary clothing remnant of high fashion currently in Nigeria. The wreath in Blake's drawing is significantly replaced by a fuel hose.

The Enslaved Africans Memorial Project
by Oku Ekpenyon

Up and down the country there are memorials dedicated to a multiplicity of worthy causes.  In London alone there are at least 500 statues and monuments but there is a glaring omission, the African contribution to the history and heritage of Britain.  London and other parts of Britain grew rich on the profits of slavery.  The wealth created by enforced enslaved African labour in the Caribbean and the Americas came back to Britain and helped to lay the foundations of the Industrial Revolution; the legacy of economic prosperity from which the country continues to benefit to this day and put the 'Great' into Great Britain.  Yet despite this there is still no public memorial recognising this important contribution.

This powerful piece of work will be made in bronze and stand 14 feet high to the top of Freedom's raised hand.  It will pay tribute to the courage and dignity of all those unnamed millions who were enslaved and their struggle for freedom.  The plinth, designed to be wheelchair accessible, will tell the story of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, on the relief around the base and include Braille to make it accessible to the visually impaired.  This will be more than just a memorial it will also be an educational resource for those who visit the site e.g. school parties etc.  The Enslaved Africans Memorial Garden will be a place for reflection, contemplation and education as well as being an 'oasis of remembrance.'  It will also be a national and international landmark in London.

Please support this ground breaking project with a donation.  To view the proposed sculpture, garden design, more information and how to donate visit www.memorial2007.org.uk

New Book: Journalism, Audiences, and Diaspora by Dr Ola Ogunyemi

Dr Ola Ogunyemi, the convener of the Media of Diaspora Research Group (MDRG) at the University of Lincoln, has edited a book titled 'Journalism, Audiences and Diaspora'. The book, written by leading scholars on diaspora journalism, is one of the few scholarly texts on the journalistic practices of the diasporic media around the world. The 15 chapters explore how diasporic communities engage with local, national and global processes (social, cultural and governmental) and how diasporic news reflects those linkages. It will be launched at the forthcoming MDRG International Symposium in October, 2015. Please click here for more information about the book.

New Book: Made in Africa: Industrial Policy in Ethiopia
by Arkebe Oqubay

Made in Africa presents the findings of original field research into the design, practice, and varied outcomes of industrial policy in the cement, leather and leather products, and floriculture sectors in Ethiopia. It explores how and why the outcomes of industrial policy are shaped by particular factors in these industries. It also examines industrial structures and associated global value chains to demonstrate the challenges faced by African firms in international markets. The findings are discussed against the backdrop of 'industrial policy', which has recently found renewed favour among economists and international organizations, and of the history of thought about and practice in industrialization. The book seeks to learn from the failures and successes in the three sectors, all of them functioning under the umbrella of a single industrial strategy. It argues that an effective industrial policy requires a more interventionist state than most development economists would accept, including those recently claiming to champion a 'new industrial policy'. Moreover, it argues that success lies in the interactions among policy, specific industrial structures, and institutions. Specifically, a successful policy, he posits should maximize linkage effects, but will founder in the absence of a clear understanding of the political economy of each sector.

About the author: Arkebe Oqubay is the Minister and Special Advisor to the Ethiopian Prime Minister. He conducted his PhD at SOAS, University of London on the topic of the book, supervised by Professor Christopher Cramer and partly funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship. Based on original and extensive research, the book offers an African perspective of industrial policy in Africa.

The Ivan Karp Archive

The online archive of Ivan Karp's published papers has moved and gotten a new look! Emory University launched the popular online archive in 2012 in order to keep Karp's (1943–2011) work widely available. Karp was a social anthropologist and a leading scholar of social theory, museum and heritage studies, and African studies. He began his long-term research with Iteso communities in western Kenya in 1969. Karp wrote extensively about power, personhood and agency, about African societies and systems of thought, and he published groundbreaking work about museums and exhibitions.

The updated Ivan Karp Archive includes new photos and links and a new homepage design. The archive organizes Karp's papers thematically, with sections devoted to Social Theory and African Systems of Thought. The archive also includes complete lists of Karp's books and of the works published in the two book series for which he served as editor: the African Systems of Thought series at Indiana University Press and the Smithsonian Series in Ethnographic Inquiry at Smithsonian Institution Press. The archive can be found online at http://halleinstitute.emory.edu/karp/index.html.

Religion,Education and Economy in Zimbabwe and the Diasporas
The Britain Society's Annual Research Day, Saturday 20 June 2015
St. Antony's College, Nissan Theatre, 62 Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6JF

The BZS 2015 Research Day will explore religion, education and the social economy in Zimbabwe and its diasporas, the linkages, the tensions and the complementarities between them, and their roles in evolution and change. Religion has been a continuous thread in Zimbabwe's socio-economic, political and developmental narrative. It has been a site of contestation, but also of regeneration, identity and diversity. It can be at once divisive and a great unifier. Education has always been an important part of the national development agenda. The knowledge economy is a vehicle for social mobility, development and affirmation, in an era of global economic competition and uncertainty.
