Study & Research

Call for participation in a Civic Engagement Project at the Refugee Archives at UEL

Project Title: Democratic Access or Privileged Exclusion: Civic Engagement through the Preservation and Access to Refugee Archives

The project will act as a pilot study to investigate the practicality of the concept of a Refugee Living Archive and Oral History Project along similar lines to the Vietnamese Oral History Project based at the University of California, Irvine (http://sites.uci.edu/vaohp/), which assembles, preserves, digitizes and disseminates the life stories of Vietnamese Americans in Southern California. We will preserve and disseminate the lived narratives of London's refugee community. It will also consider the potential demand for a community focusing oral history centre at UEL.

We invite our local refugee community to participate in the research by sharing your story with us. We are interested in hearing about your lived experience in Britain as this would help us to develop an oral history and living refugee archives which can be accessible to other communities and students across UK and elsewhere.

For more information, please contact Rumana Hashem, PhD Post-doctoral Researcher, at r.hashem@uel.ac.uk  or on 0208 223 7676.

Complete this survey to help ASAP develop a webinar pilot project

ASAP is an independent charity which works to reduce destitution among asylum seekers by protecting their legal rights to food and shelter.

The Webinars Pilot Project

ASAP's pilot project will involve the design and launch of three free webinars, each lasting between 1 and 1.5 hours over the coming months.  The webinars will be facilitated by ASAP's experienced legal advisors, with opportunities for participants to engage interactively with the material and to ask questions during the presentation.

The Survey

The first step for us is to find out what training our network members and partner front-line organisations across the UK would most like to see delivered by ASAP as webinars.  We would be really grateful, therefore, if you would take a minute to complete the following (very brief) survey:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/28VL5DT

Looking for project partners

Sutton House and Breaker's Yard is a National Trust property on Homerton High Street. It's the oldest home in East London with a free playground for families.
They work with a number of different community groups including Turkish and Kurdish women, 'Recycled Teenagers' (70 – 90 yr olds), ESOL learners, local families and school children.
Sutton House and Breaker's Yard are now looking for a partner refugee organisation to work with on a family learning project. They hope to run an arts-based family learning literacy project for families from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds in Autumn 2015, which would progress into a regular after school club provision in 2016.

If you're working with families and children from refugee backgrounds then they'd really love to hear from you. The idea is that you'd work together on the content of the project using the house as a learning resource and the garden as a space to play. They're applying for external funding which would hopefully cover travel costs, food and drink and freelance facilitators and artists.

O2 Think Big aims to find young people with great ideas and help them turn their ideas into reality. This is done by awarding funding and delivering training and support. Projects have to help the community or tackle a problem with society. Projects that only help one person will not be accepted. Beyond that, applicants can do everything or anything - in fact the more bold and creative the ideas, the better. Full details on their website.

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK

John Major praises 'guts and drive' of immigrants in the UK Comments: Mr John Major  is right about migrants in the UK and worldwide. Most of  migrants  leave their countries as asylum seekers fleeing persecution, lack of freedom and human rights abuses. Other leave their countries just to look for new opportunities. Arriving in the new countries such as UK , they work hard to survive. In most cases they have left their families and relatives. They have to share their earnings with the people their left behind and to support the education of their relatives.  They live in disadvantageous situations because they  are not  in the same situation like the British people who  have families that  help them to set up a business for example, pay their education, help them to raise funding or to get a bank loan, to inherit houses and other assets. They face institutional discrimination because most of the...
